2018 MAINE MASS TIMBER DESIGN COMPETITION

This year’s Maine Mass Timber Design Competition is intended to generate design ideas and test implementation of an emerging technology that hold specific promise for the state economy.

DESIGN ABSTRACT

Remote Mass Timber Wilderness Lodge - Open Ideas Competition

Maine Huts & Trails maintains a network of backcountry trails and remote wilderness lodges woven through the woods and mountains of western Maine that provide a unique opportunity to explore and discover this beautiful region. The goal of this year’s competition is to study and develop a design concepts for a new hut on a established backcountry site, as well as to explore the implementation of mass timber construction technologies, particularly Cross Laminated Timber construction, in a remote location. A detailed Design Brief is available here and response to questions will be posted to this site until the close of registration in August.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Open to Professionals and Students (US citizens or permenant residents)
  • Open to Teams of up to four members
  • Interdisciplinary Teams are encouraged

DEADLINES

  • Registration Opens: Friday, June 29, 2018

  • Registration Closes: Monday, September 17th, 2018

  • Submission Deadline: Monday, September 17th at 11:59 pm EST

RECOGNITION AND AWARDS

First Prize project will be recognized with a $5,000 award. Winners will be announced at the October 11th Awards Ceremony at University of Maine Mass Timber Conference at University of Maine, Orono, Maine All entries will be displayed at the Awards Ceremony, and on our website.

The program is purely an ideas competition, and is in no way intended to be considered a selection process for a actual building, on this or any other site.

Is registration open to professionals or students outside of the state of Maine? 

Yes, students or professionals currently working or studying in the United States are welcome to participate in this year's award program.

Is registration open to professionals or students outside of the United States? 

Award eligibility is limited to teams with a current presence in the United States as we are unable to distribute the prizes internationally for this year's award program.
